🎯 Direct vs Reported Speech

  • Direct Speech: She said, "I am tired." — Ela disse: "Estou cansada."
  • Reported Speech: She said (that) she was tired. — Ela disse que estava cansada.

Note as mudanças: sumiu as aspas, o pronome I virou she, e o verbo am virou was. Essas transformações seguem regras claras.

⏰ Regra 1: Backshift dos Tempos Verbais

Quando o verbo introdutório (said, told, etc.) está no passado, o tempo verbal da fala original "recua" um passo:

Direct SpeechReported Speech
Present Simple → Past Simple
Present Continuous → Past Continuous
Past Simple → Past Perfect
Present Perfect → Past Perfect
Will → Would
Can → Could
May → Might
Must → Had to

Exemplos:

  • Direct: "I work here." → Reported: He said he worked there.
  • Direct: "I will call you." → Reported: She said she would call me.
  • Direct: "I have finished." → Reported: He said he had finished.

🧍 Regra 2: Mudança de Pronomes

Pronomes mudam de acordo com o contexto:

  • Direct: She said, "I love my job."
  • Reported: She said (that) she loved her job.

  • Direct: "Where do you live?" → Reported: He asked where I lived.
  • Direct: "Are you happy?" → Reported: She asked if I was happy.

📢 Ordens e Pedidos

Use told / asked + objeto + to + infinitivo:

  • Direct: "Sit down!" → Reported: The teacher told us to sit down.
  • Direct: "Please, help me." → Reported: He asked me to help him.

Para ordens negativas: told / asked + objeto + NOT to + infinitivo. Ex.: She told me not to worry.

🎬 Verbos Introdutórios Além de "Say" e "Tell"

Enriqueça sua escrita usando verbos como admit, announce, complain, deny, explain, promise, suggest, warn, advise, insist. Exemplos:

  • He admitted (that) he had lied.
  • She suggested going to the beach.
  • They promised to help.

⚠️ Say vs Tell: Tell exige objeto (a pessoa a quem se fala): "He told me…". Say não: "He said…".

🚫 Quando NÃO Aplicar o Backshift?

O backshift é opcional quando a informação ainda é verdadeira ou universal:

  • She said the Earth is round. (fato universal — não muda)
  • He said he lives in São Paulo. (se ele ainda mora lá)

❓ FAQ — Reported Speech

Preciso usar "that" sempre?

Não. That é opcional após verbos como say, tell, think, know. Ambas são corretas: "He said that he was tired" ou "He said he was tired".

E se o verbo introdutório estiver no presente?

Se você usar says em vez de said, o backshift não acontece: "He says he is tired."
